mood: sort of amused

there was an earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan... and u noe, what a coincidence! in geog, we're studying earthquakes and well... i can now use this as a case study!!! hahaz... oops... how evil can i get??? they're suffering there in japan and i'm here, so comfortably seated and being so amused... oh well... here's a brief report on the earthquake...

"The 8.0-magnitude quake, followed by two more - one of 5.8 the other 7.1 - forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

A tsunami, or tidal wave, warning went out immediately as the quakes sent waves up to 1.3m high hurtling towards the entire eastern coast of Hokkaido and the north of the main Japanese island of Honshu.

Scientists said the epicentre of the quake was 42km below the Earth's crust, off the coast of Kushiro city, about 900km north-east of Tokyo." -Straits Times Interactive

"Unlike the magnitude-7.2 earthquake that devastated Kobe in 1995 and was focused directly below that port city, the epicentre yesterday was relatively remote: 42km under the seabed 80km off the coast." -Straits Times Interactive

the epicentre is the point on the earth's surface, which is directly above the focus. (the focus is the source of the earthquake.) hahaz... a core geog student speaking here... ;p
